A mine-spec UTV is not defined by one universal accessory pack. Requirements can differ between operators, projects, commodities and individual sites. The safest purchasing process starts with the current site standard and a documented review of the vehicle, fitted equipment and intended duty.
This checklist helps procurement and operations teams prepare that review. It is a scoping guide, not a substitute for the mine operator’s procedures, risk assessment or approval process.
Obtain the current site specification first
Ask the site contact for the latest light-vehicle or mobile-equipment requirements before selecting accessories. Confirm whether the document applies to UTVs, side-by-sides or another equipment class, and check if contractor vehicles have additional rules.
Record the proposed work area, routes, maximum speed, passengers, payload, shift length, charging or refuelling arrangements and interaction with heavy equipment. These details affect both vehicle selection and the required controls.
Isolation and electrical controls
Many sites require clearly identified isolation points or lockable battery isolators. Confirm the number, type, location, labelling and access requirements with the site. Electric UTVs may also require specific emergency-isolation information, charging controls or external connection points.
Any electrical work should be completed and documented by appropriately qualified personnel. Added equipment must be compatible with the vehicle’s electrical system and should not compromise manufacturer requirements or warranty coverage.
Visibility and vehicle identification
Review requirements for high-visibility markings, reflective tape, flags, beacons, headlights, work lights and identification numbers. The correct colour, placement and operating conditions may be specified by the site. Visibility equipment should be positioned without obstructing the driver or creating new hazards.
Communication and warning systems
Confirm the required UHF radio channels, antenna type and installation standard. Some applications also call for reversing alarms, horns, two-way communication procedures or other warning systems. Test communication performance in the areas where the vehicle will operate rather than assuming workshop reception will be representative.
Fire and emergency equipment
Check the required fire-extinguisher type, rating, quantity, mounting position, inspection tag and access. First-aid kits, spill equipment, emergency information and wheel chocks may also be specified. Mounting should keep equipment secure over rough terrain while remaining accessible.
Occupant and rollover protection
Review seat, restraint, door, grab-handle, rollover-protection and protective-guard requirements. Confirm how many occupants are permitted and whether any rear-window or load-guard certification is required. Accessories and loads must not interfere with restraints, exits, sight lines or protective structures.
Tyres, payload and terrain capability
Match tyres, ground clearance, suspension and drivetrain controls to the actual roads and work areas. Calculate the combined weight of occupants, tools, cargo and every fitted accessory. A mine-spec package can add meaningful weight, so payload and axle limits still matter after the vehicle has been equipped.
If towing is planned, confirm the trailer, coupling, brakes, lighting, load and site rules as one system. The vehicle’s published towing figure is only one part of the decision.
Documentation and handover
Prepare a handover pack that identifies the vehicle, fitted equipment, manuals, inspection records, certificates and maintenance responsibilities. Photograph key items and labels, and record any site approval or inspection outcome. Operators should receive training specific to the vehicle and the site.
